I have a fascination with dreams
and the subconscious. I am
interested particularly in the distance between sleeping and waking, the almost
tangible moment of transition as a person falls from one into the other - such
as Alice falling down the rabbit hole.
Most of my drawings and paintings are mixed media works including oil,
pencil, chalk, wax and lacquered spills; the latter hinting towards fluids that
would be associated with bodily functions. An important aspect for me is to
work out a marriage between abstract ground, unrecognizable organic shapes, and
representation. Using personal
icons and symbolism, I map out the narrative within my paintings. These icons are recycled and resurrected
throughout many bodies of my work.
The visual path of thought is of high importance to me.
Needing ample surface area in which to catch the "debris" (emotion in the form of color, random marks, and symbolism as narrative), I work on multiple canvases side by side. Because memory builds and moves, what is revealed becomes an inter-woven dream space. My goal in the end: canvas that becomes palimpsest, having gathered relevant and seemingly random information.
